Winter preparation starts now!

If your boat will mostly be tied to the dock this winter, now is the time to stow the sails and make sure your winter covers are on and secure. If leaving your sails on the boat, make sure they have proper Sunbrella covers to keep them dry and protected. Storing your sails in a dry place for the winter is more ideal- it will extend their life, and can prevent storm damage.

This is also the perfect time to have your annual full inspections and to get anything repaired that you put off while you were busy sailing.

On all sails, we will replace telltales (complimentary) and we will provide you with a complete estimate for any needs. The most common problems that we fix are: stitching, worn out corner webbing, small holes at batten pockets, worn down spreader patches and broken slides. Please check your sails for these common issues.

If you bought any new canvas over the last few years, we want to know how it is holding up. We always encourage any feedback to make our products better and to maintain outstanding durability from wear and tear. Let us know if you have any thoughts or comments. Thanks!

Local boat Orcinius prepares for a long voyage

Bon Voyage John and Lisa!

After a long, busy summer at the loft, I can honestly say that it feels great making a difference in the lives of others. Even with all the late nights, tight deadlines, and production scheduling, we know our customers can enjoy their new products for years to come. It was our pleasure working onboard the catamaran Orcinius , a Lagoon 440, assisting John and his wife Lisa prepare for the next journey in their lives- sailing around the world. While John was busy refurbishing the boat and the interior, much of the boat’s canvas needed updating to accommodate the crew for their long voyage. Knowing they were headed to tropical destinations with miles of endless seas in between, they wanted to be prepared for it all. Kerry outfitted the boat with a new in boom furling main and furling schreacher, while I was busy exploring new options for keeping them comfortable.

The upper deck cushions needed replacing – according to John, it was most important for him to be at ease sailing his boat from the fly bridge. We updated their exterior cushion sets to be perfect for areas where cushions get wet. When they brought the boat safely to Oregon, it was clear the dodger was tearing and leaking. The frame was modified with more handle grabs and supports so they can enjoy their new warm northwest-style enclosure. As for the interior upholstery, we used the softest material out there: Ultraleather. This elegant fabric is earth friendly, amazingly light, durable, water repellent, and easy to clean- it also has no pvc, plasticizers, heavy metals, or toxic by-products. John and Lisa have been inspiring to me as well, pushing the limits of our achievements. We wish them safe and happy travels and look forward to updates on their adventures!

Anika Caldwell

Rain Shelter Solutions

With all the rain storms, we continue to provide coverage for keeping your investments dry!

Sunbrella Boom Tent Covers are a simple solution to keep your cockpit and hatches from leaking. A marine suitable tent cover made with a quality waterproof fabric will last much longer than a cheap tarp you by off the shelf. And it won't need to be replaced after a heavy wind storm or after prolonged sun exposure.

Boom tents work well for multiple uses. They protect from rain, sunshine and dirt build up. Our boom tents are made with grommets that tie out to your lifelines and mast for securety and versitility. They fold up small and are easy to re-waterproof in the future.

They can also be hung by three points (like a sail) in your yard. They provide the same benefits to your outside patio or yard space so you can still enjoy the outdoors without getting soaked! You can keep your patio furniture covered as well.

Let us know if we can provide you with a rain shelter solution!

North Winds Canvas involved with local TV series ‘Leverage’, which began filming on Mt. Hood for Season Four!

North Winds Canvas involved with local TV series ‘Leverage’, which began filming on Mt. Hood for Season Four!

While the show Leverage has been shooting in Portland for the last few years, their most recent shoot includes a scene filmed on Mt. Hood in and around a large tent structure. With less than ideal weather, filming in near-blizzard conditions continued this last week while a stormy weather system passed through the NW.

Their team consulted with us about design and construction for this massive snow tent. We worked closely with their production crew and Assistant Art Director Adam Reamer to finalize a design, and fabric details. Due to time constraints, collaboration on both ends was critical. The covered structure that resulted was approximately 32 feet long by 20 feet across. North Winds Canvas fabricated the large blue fabric tops and entrances with roll up zipper doors. We will post more photos to our website and update you when the episode airs this summer. Stay tuned!

Thanks to Randal Groves, Adam Reamer and the crew who were great to work with!

I recently checked in with Adam to find how it how worked for them:

“It worked out great. Thanks! It fit great and tensioned nicely with the grommets and lines provided. Withstood 70mph winds and heavy snow accumulation without flinching, while our other smaller expedition tent collapsed.”

A summary for your enjoyment from Wikipedia:

Leverage is an American television drama series on TNT that premiered in December 2008. Leverage follows a five-person team of professional thieves, computer experts and con artists, headed up by former insurance investigator, Nathan Ford, who use their skills to right corporate and governmental injustices inflicted on common citizens.

Anika Caldwell

Production Manager / Fabricator
