The type of line used for sail controls such as the vang, cunningham, toppling lift, outhaul, and traveller will depend on how important each one of the folling characteristics is to you:
- Hand
- How does the line feel in your hand with regards to the type of fiber.
-
- Weight
- How important is the weight of the line for the application?
-
- Stretch
- Does the line have to be low-stretch (i.e. a backstay) or is a little bit of stretch acceptable (such as for a topping lift)?
-
- Strength
- What will be the highest load on the line? The max load should be about 10% of the line's breaking strength.
-
- UV Resistance
- Will the line be constantly exposed to UV, or will it be put away after sailing?
Samson XLS, Warpspeed, Lightning, and Lightspeed, and Maffioli Swiftcord are all commonly used for control line applications. Oftentimes, the best solution for a control line is to use two different types of line in the purchase system, or to strip the cover off of a braided line. We can help you determine which lines will best suit your needs. |
